Originally I thought the problem was in the Windows 10 File Explorer, but someone suggested it was a LibreOffice problem.
I’ve never run LibreOffice before, so I’m trying to figure it out as I go. I CAN open docx and xlsx files if I click on the LibreOffice shortcut and display the files from there, but I find it easier to do from File Explorer. My CPU utilization does not spike when the docx or xlsx files are hung up. I CAN open older doc and xls files from File Explorer. If I click on the red X close button in the upper right, file explorer closes. If I click on anything else once I reach that state, a “not responding” message displays at the top left of the screen. Then all of a sudden the docx and xlsx files wouldn’t open and the little “spinner” displays forever. I successfully set LibreOffice as the program to open my old WORD and EXCEL files, and was able to open them from the File Explorer screen for a while. If it's just a software issue, you might already pick up on that from checking the disk with the live cd or from checking the disk in another computer.Brand new Windows 10 desktop with LibreOffice installed. If it's bad hardware, you'll need to rely on previous backups, there's little you can do to recover. Only pay if it's really crucial, but I always discourage people to pay criminals. Keep the backup you made, a decryption tool might soon be posted on. Save yourself a lot of trouble by asking if there are any backups first though. If no tool is available yet, check out showdow copies or try recuva or other tools to retrieve whatever's possible. If it's ransomware, check out to see if you can decrypt.
Investigate whether it really is ransomware (personal files will be encrypted) or it's a hardware issue where the HD has gone bad. It sounds like ransomware and turning the computer on will only allow more encryption to take place. First of all, shut the computer down and either start up with a linux live CD or mount the drive in another computer.
